Lexington Democratic Club Statement on the Passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
The Lexington Democratic Club mourns the sad loss of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, an extraordinary woman and native New Yorker whose fearless and steadfast legal work laid the foundation for so much progress in our country. We join countless voices across our great nation expressing deep sorrow over the passing of Justice Ginsburg and extending heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.
Justice Ginsburg was a lion of the American court system and an incomparable icon of both national and international standing. Her passing leaves an enormous void not only for the Supreme Court but for our entire country.
"Notorious RBG," as Justice Ginsberg was affectionately referred to in recent years, was best known for her tenacious efforts in feminism and civil rights. Her opinions were exemplars of legal precision and authority, and many of her dissents have been rightly lauded as powerful statements of moral clarity and indignation. The positive impact of Justice Ginsburg's legal efforts changed our nation for the better and her brilliant yet straightforward articulation of the law will continue to influence and inspire many generations of legal minds and everyday American for decades to come.
In light of Justice Ginsburg "fervent" last wish that her Supreme Court seat not be filled until the next presidential term, as well as the precedent set with the Supreme Court vacancy in 2016, the Lexington Democratic Club calls upon all lawmakers in Washington, DC to do everything in their power to ensure that the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court is not filled until after January 20, 2021.
